Types of Dentures

  • Partial Dentures & Full Dentures –  Partial dentures replace a section of missing teeth, while full dentures replace all of the teeth on the upper or lower jaw. Dentures are removable and provide many benefits such as improved speech, support for facial muscles and restoring your ability to chew.
  • Immediate Dentures & Conventional Dentures – Immediate dentures are fitted and placed right away, allowing the patient to have a set of dentures immediately following removal of any existing teeth. Since the healing is not complete, the denture may fit differently once swelling goes down. If this happens, adjustments will need to be made on the dentures so that it fits properly. Conventional dentures are made once the healing process is over. Typically this is around 6-8 weeks after any existing teeth have been removed.
  • Overdenture – An overdenture is used when a patient chooses to supplement their denture with dental implants. Often called an implant-supported denture, typically two dental implants are used to firmly secure the denture in place. This overdenture is often used on the bottom jaw to provide patients with a stronger bite.

The Denture Process

Dentures are typically completed over a process of several visits. The first step is the initial consultation. Your dentist will examine your smile, answer any questions you have and help determine if dentures are the best solution for you. The type of denture will be determined and plans will be made for the entire process. Next, impressions will be taken so that the denture can be created. The shape, color and fit will be tested before the permanent denture is made. Any adjustments will be made before the final placement of the denture. If the denture ever needs an adjustment or repair, an appointment can be made to examine the denture and make necessary changes.
